"The Princess of France" has an appealing lightness and modesty, but it also feels flimsy and thin, like clever scribblings in the margins of a book, fleeting insights in search of form and energy.

Yas, Queen! In addition to being a good politician, the Princess is practical. She comes to Navarre with business on her mind and seeks nothing short of accomplishing her goal. (She wants the province of Aquitaine, which lies in southwestern France but which the King of Navarre still controls as he waits for payment from her father.)...

The Princess Of France ambles from one low-key encounter to another, rarely engaging directly with the Bard, and never elevating its heart rate beyond the resting level. Victor, as played by Tellarini, seems far too dull to inspire even the lukewarm romantic interest shown by his actresses, and in general, everyone onscreen gives the impression of having been chosen primarily for their amiability.

Coming on the heels of Rosalinda and Viola, The Princess Of France is his third consecutive reinterpretation of the Bard. It begins with an extended dream sequence and ends with a character’s fantasy of how things could have been, and, in between, it moves between relationships and role-playing with an inventive fluidity that is very much Piñeiro’s own.
